This design compliments a renovation to a beautiful 1930s bluestone cottage accommodation project. The high-impact, low-maintenance garden celebrate local place through incorporating mounting that borrows from the undulating landscape of the Grampians and embracing the flat open plains to the west of the cottage. The site has several significant river red gums which make for natural gathering spaces, and we incorporated garden nooks for moments of privacy.

Grampians

The overall concept for this project (both house and garden) is to create a garden house - opening up a small, enclosed envelope to the east and west gardens to create views at either side and the sense of being surrounded by the environment. Our garden design was done simultaneously with the house design and works with blurring the indoor/outdoor and public/private thresholds to achieve this goal.

The back-yard design (pictured) focuses on indigenous planting to attract insects, birds and frogs. The brief was to include water and therefore a key feature of the design is the swale snaking through the back yard to a pond and circulating back to a rock bubbler, with the tranquil sound of water ever-present in the space.

Anglesea

This design reimagines a challenging site with a steep, sloping backyard into a series of relaxed, terraced spaces for gathering and entertaining. Bricks salvaged from the home’s renovation were repurposed into built-in block seating and considered perimeter planting provides privacy where needed without interrupting views from the house to the park beyond. The result is a layered garden that feels both private and open, shaped for everyday living and connection.

Glen Iris

This project transforms a once dysfunctional, concreted space into a leafy, permeable courtyard that breathes new life into a small footprint. Vertical space is maximised with climbing greenery, turning an unused corner into a welcoming outdoor space.

Mornington

This coastal garden in Anglesea works to anchor a large home into its landscape through layers of local vegetation, softening edges and giving the house a sense of belonging. Lawn and clear spaces invite play for young children and the family dog, and reclaimed timber steps and pathways navigate the site’s natural levels. The result is a garden that feels at home in its setting — practical for family life and connected to place.
